What is BV?

BV, also known as bacterial vaginosis, is the infection or inflammation of the vagina that is triggered by an overgrowth of bacteria and results in the disruption of normal vaginal secretions. BV is a very common condition that affects almost 1 out of 3 women in the US.

The most common symptom of BV is a vaginal discharge that can be grey, white or yellow in color and has a fishy or musty odor. Other symptoms of bacterial vaginosis include itching or irritation and sometimes swelling of the vagina, as well as stomach pains and a burning sensation during urination. However, many times bacterial vaginosis is asymptomatic. In fact, 50% of sufferers don’t experience any symptoms at all.

What causes BV?

Even though, the cause of bacterial vaginosis is not fully understood, it’s clear that the underlying mechanism is an imbalance in the bacteria that are found inside the vagina of the woman. The vagina contains both good and & bad bacteria, but the bad bacteria are normally fewer.

In bacterial vaginosis, the normal balance of bacteria gets disrupted and the harmful bacteria multiply much more than usual. The majority of the bacteria inside a healthy vagina are a type of bacteria called lactobacilli. These bacteria secrete lactic acid, which makes the vagina slightly acidic and prevents the overgrowth of other bacteria. Even though bacterial vaginosis is not generally considered a particularly dangerous condition, it should be treated because it may have some serious health implications. The bacteria overgrowth that is responsible for BV may cause inflammation in the organs of the inner genital tract and especially in the fallopian tubes. Additionally, BV  may adversely affect the outcome of a pregnancy, both for the mother (postpartum endometritis, chorioamnionitis) and for the baby (premature delivery, infection of the newborn). The link between bacterial vaginosis and miscarriages was investigated by Ralph et al. The researchers examined 867 women undergoing IVF to determine the effect of BV before conception, on the frequency of miscarriages during the first trimester of pregnancy. The results showed that bacterial vaginosis increases the risk of miscarriage in a statistically significant way. Specifically, the rate of miscarriage was 31.6% in women with bacterial vaginosis and 18.5% in women without bacterial vaginosis. After taking into account risk factors such as age and smoking, the difference was still statistically significant.
